That night at the sheds, the two trains make up their quarrel. Victoria is happy that she'll be running on the Underground railway for many years to come, and Jubilee's happy to have learnt that being younger and faster isn't neccesarily better. Victoria and Jubilee then reiterate the phrase "Better late than never, but better never late" and all the trains laugh.

Running Late is the 14th episode of Underground Ernie. It originally aired on CBeebies on 22nd June 2006.

Plot

The trains all wake up late one morning, Jubilee in particular. Victoria is annoyed at this, telling him that being late isn't good show, to which Jubilee responds with "better late than never". Victoria tells him that it's "better never late". Bakerloo then notes that they're all going to be late if they don't hurry up, and the trains all rush off to work.

Ernie arrives at the control room pulling a very old vacuum cleaner with him, much to Millie's surprise. The vacuum cleaner belongs to Ernie's mum - it's on the way out but she can't bear to part with it so Ernie's bought it into work to see if Mr Rails can fix it up. Ernie then takes the vacuum cleaner with him on his tour of the stations, planning to drop it off at Mr Rail's workshop later.

Victoria and Jubilee arrive at International Underground, where she further tells him off for waking up late. Jubilee isn't in the mood for being lectured and insults Victoria, telling her she'd be all puffed out if she sped along like him. Jubilee then speeds off to work. Victoria is quite shocked at this and mills it over while going along her line. Jubilee races past Circle, who tells him that being fast isn't the best thing, and that sometimes it's nice to take it slow. Jubilee doesn't take any of this on board, however, and races off.

Victoria arrives at the botanical gardens, where Mr Rails shows her a new flower that's been growing. Victoria is glad to see it, but suddenly she sneezes and her glasses shoot off her nose and break! Mr Rails tells Victoria that the reason it happened was because of her stuffed up valves, and that it's natural for a train of her age. Mr Rails helps guide Victoria to his workshop where he'll fix up her glasses. Millie gets Jubilee to cover Victoria's line, much to her dismay.

When they arrive at the workshop, Ernie's there with his mum's vacuum cleaner. Mr Rails and Ernie then take a look at it, where they deem it "old" and "unfixable". Mr Rails says it's best to throw it on the scrapheap and get a new one, the old one will be forgotten soon enough. Victoria, on the other hand, doesn't know they're talking about the vacuum cleaner - she thinks they're talking about her! Ernie leaves Mr Rails to tend to Victoria, who's beginning to cry.

Jubilee is doing well covering Victoria's route, showing off his speed to Hammersmith and City at the crossing. The twins worry about Jubilee's constant speeding, and Jubilee races towards the botanical gardens. However, he stops suddenly and finds that he can't move anymore! Jubilee radios Millie to tell him of his situation: he's broken a gasket - and made a hole in a plant pot. Millie reprimands Jubilee for showing off, and then says she'll send Victoria to pick him up, much to Jubilee's dismay.

Victoria's glasses are soon repaired and Millie then radios Victoria to bring Mr Rails to meet Ernie at International Underground. Victoria accepts that her time as come, and tearfully goes to meet Ernie for the last time. Along the way, she's stopped by Bakerloo, who asks why she's crying. When Victoria says she's being scrapped and will soon be forgotten, Bakerloo is taken aback - he tells his friend he will never forget her, to which Victoria thanks him. She arrives at International Underground, and soon learns the truth - Ernie would never scrap her! She's a valued member of the team and is one of the driving forces behind the railway's success. Victoria, now with a brand new lease on life, happily goes to rescue Jubilee.

Mr Rails tells Jubilee that he'll have to wait until the morning to be fitted with a new gasket, and Victoria, feeling sorry for him, offers to do his work in the morning until he's fixed. She then tows Jubilee back to Mr Rails' workshop.
